Convicted Felons Fund Rackauckas Re-Elect Committee

Tony Rackauckas Must Return Dirty Money Revealed By Campaign Finance Statements

Orange County August 10th –Tony Rackauckas kept campaign cash from contributors convicted of felonies, reflected by his attached campaign finance statements (Form 460). Tony Rackauckas is surrounded by scandal while on his watch overall crime is up 23%, dangerous criminals have been set free or had their sentences reduced due to incompetence by the DA’s office, and families of crime victims are suing Rackauckas. Rackauckas must return the money he has taken from convicted felons before the people of Orange County lose all trust and confidence in their public agencies. The Spitzer for District Attorney campaign demands that Rackauckas immediately donate the money to a charity that benefits crime victims and their families.

Con artist Farzaneh Akhavi, the first dirty donor to give a $1,700 contribution to Rackauckas’ campaign, was indicted on 87 counts for money laundering, identity theft, and wire fraud in 2017. Rackauckas also kept $1,500 from fraudster Todd Stuart Kaplan who pled guilty for attempting to evade or defeat tax, (see attached indictment and plea agreement).* Todd Spitzer made the statement following the revelations, “Tony Rackauckas has been bought and paid for by criminals – the very people he is responsible to protect us from.”

He continued, “Crime is soaring in our neighborhoods. It will be my duty as District Attorney to root out government corruption when it presents itself and refocus the department on its mission to keep us safe.”

*Attached are the following pieces of evidence:

  • Rackauckas Form 460’s showing contributions from both Farzaneh Akhavi and Stuart Kaplan.
  • Form 460 showing Kaplan’s actual address unredacted. This was traced to a corporation owned by Kaplan proving this is the correct Stuart Kaplan.
  • A copy of Stuart Kaplan’s plea agreement.
  • On March 2, 2002, Kaplan was indicted on felony criminal charges of conspiracy, health care fraud, money laundering, anti-kickback violation, attempt to evade taxes, and aiding and abetting in The United States District Court, District of Nevada. On November 2, 2009, Kaplan agreed to a plea agreement where he would plead guilty to attempting to evade or defeat tax, and all other charges would be dropped.
  • A copy of Farzaneh Akhavi’s plea agreement.
  • On March 28, 2018, Farzaneh Akhavi agreed to a plea agreement where he would plead guilty to the following felonies: bank fraud, wire fraud, transactional money laundering and tax evasion. Akhavi was sentenced to not exceed 97 months.
